| Sheep… I recall a story a friend of mine shared … They had sheep (and a man to take care of them), but when he was not available, someone else filled in. This man knew nothing about sheep. He tried to chase them into their pen rather than lead them. Because sheep are followers by nature, this was impossible, they just scattered. Who, better than David, would write this twenty-third Psalm, since he was a shepherd. In this story we learn the Lord is our shepherd so He supplies all that we need. He is concerned about our comfort (in green meadows), rest and refreshing (beside peaceful streams). Knowing that sheep will not drink from waterfalls or turbulent waters, the shepherd will not lead them there. So our Good Shepherd, the Lord, leads us to places of tranquility and peace. I find the rod and staff, (club and crook) interesting. These two items are all a shepherd carries for defense. The rod (or club) can be used on the sheep’s enemies. The staff (or crook) is for protection. He can gently pull them back for safety, if necessary. I understand oil is used for healing if the sheep are scratched or injured in some way. When sheep come in from the pasture, the shepherd checks over them and pours oil on their wounds. Likewise, with the stripes of Jesus, we are healed. And there’s more! He even prepares a table for us in the presence of our enemies. Today our “enemy” is satan; the Bible says he comes to kill, steal and destroy. Our “table” is life abundant and God-given authority over every evil work. Surely goodness and mercy follows us, unfailing Love pursues us, and an eternal home (bought and paid for) is waiting for us! Truly our Good Shepherd has provided all we need! Viola |
